The BespOak Kitchen System
Currently the biggest drawbacks in having a new kitchen built are the relatively high cost and the time usually taken from initial design consultation through to manufacture and then installation. This is largely the result of supply and demand. Other factors affecting the kitchen industry are the shortage of trades people skilled in traditional joinery techniques, the high cost of a sustainable imported hardwood suitable for kitchen joinery and the work required to construct a kitchen in a timeless style that will endure generations of use.
The net result of all this is that the majority of new kitchens are now machine produced entirety from MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) and particle board. These engineered products are made by breaking down waste timber residuals including sawdust, combining them with a synthetic resin and bonding together under heat and pressure. Particle board is made from larger particles than MDF.
MDF and particle board are great products suitable for a variety of uses but are not designed for joining without special hardware as they don’t have the structural integrity to be joined with conventional screws and glue or time-honoured methods like mortise and tenon, tongue and groove or dovetail joints.
MDF kitchen cabinet doors and drawer fronts are generally finished with melamine low pressure laminate (Melteca) or “thermofoil”, whereby they are wrapped with a very thin layer of vacuum-pressed vinyl. Higher end finishes are veneered with genuine timber, or painted.
